Genesis 31-40

 

Genesis Thirty-One

1-2      Jacob took wealth from Lebanon.

3          God told Jacob to move on home.

4-10     Jacob calls family forward, and tells of his dream.

 11-13   Angel of God (Christ) speaks to Jacob in a dream.

14-16    Leah and Rachel speak.

17-21     Rachel steals household idols as they leave.

22-23     Laban pursues Jacob for a week.

24           God strictly warns Laban.

25-30      Laban chews Jacob out.

31-32      Punishment for idolatry is death.

33-34      Laban searches for household idols.

36-42       Jacob's anger towards Laban.

43-44       Laban's reply

45             Stone Pillar

46-49        Heap of witnesses

50-53         Due to fear of God, there would be no other wife.

Genesis Thirty-two

1-2              See angels, and the place gets called the double camp.

3-5              Messengers sent to Esau to tell him of the possessions on the way.

6                 Messengers return to tell him that an army of men is coming with Esau.

7                 Esau feared and divided his wealth among his company.

8                  If one company is attacked, the other shall live.

9-12             Jacob's prayer to God.

13-15           Jacob lodges with gifts for Esau.

16-21           Sends a present with a servant.

22-23            Takes those with him and crosses the Jabbok ford.

25                  Wrestles with God until daybreak.

26-28             Jacob's name changed to Israel.

29-30             God blessed Jacob, and Jacob renamed the place Peniel. 

31-32             Limped on his hip so Jews won't eat ham.

Genesis Thirty-Three

1-2                Jacob splits family up.

3-4                Jacob and Esau meet.

5-7                 Children and mothers come to be seen by Esau.

8-9                 Esau questions it and says he has had enough.

10-11              Jacob urges Esau to take the gift.

12                   Let us journey on.

13-14              If driven on, some of the company might die.

15-17              Esau returns to Seir, while Jacob stays at Succoth.

18-20             Jacob buys land in Canaan, and he called it Elohe Israel or the God of  Israel.

Genesis Thirty-Four

1-2               Dinah was raped

3-5                Idea of marriage and Jacob kept quiet.  

6-7                Hamon spoke to Jacob about making Dinah Shechem's wife.  Her brothers were grieved and angered by the idea.

8-10               Plea for marriage.

11-12             Plea from Shechem for Dinah as wife.

13-16             Marriage only if all males are circumcised.

17-24              The thing pleased Hamon and Shechem, so all men were circumcised.

25-27               When the men were in pain, Simeon and Levi killed them.

28-29                Plundered riches, livestock, and little ones from the city.

30                      Israel was troubled by what his sons had done, and feared the Perezites as well as the Canaanites.

Genesis Thirty-Five

1                    God told Jacob to go dwell in Bethel.

2-3                  Put away idols and move to Bethel.

4                      Idols and gold were hidden under the terebinth tree.

5-7                   Moved to Bethel, where they were feared by the towns.

8                      Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, dies and is buried under a terebinth tree.

9-12                God blessed Jacob, changing his name to Israel.

 13-15              Pillar set up at Bethel.

16-18                Rachel dies at the birth of Benjamin.

19                    Buried on the way to Eph-Roth.

20-22                Israel moved to Eder, where Reuben lay with his father's concubine.

22-26               Twelve sons of Israel.

27-29                Issac died at 180 years old.

                                Genesis Thirty-Six

1-7                    Esau married Canaanite wives and his sons.

8                        Dwelt in Mount Seir, that is Edom.

9-14                  Esau's Genealogy

15-19                Chiefs of Edom

20-30                 Those living in Seir were Esau's descendants.

31-39                 Kings of Edom

40-43                  Chiefs of Esau; Esau was the father of Edomites.

Genesis Thirty-Seven

1                          Jacob dwelt in the land of Canaan.

2                          At the age of seventeen, Joseph brought a bad report back about his brothers.

3-4                       Joseph was loved more than all his brothers by Israel; therefore, his brothers hated him!

5                          Joseph had a dream and was hated for it.

6-8                       Dream of sheaves by Joseph, which made his brothers hate him all the more.

9-11                      Joseph had a celestial dream which he told his family.  This caused his brothers to be envious of him, while his father rebuked him, keeping all these things in his mind.

12-14                   Joseph sent to Shechem to check on livestock and his brothers.

15-17                   From Shechem, Joseph was sent on to Dothan, where he found his brothers and livestock.

18                         Brothers rise up to kill Joseph (first sibling murder found in Genesis 4 with Cain and Abel).

19-20                   Brothers said, "The dreamer is coming; let us kill him and throw him in the pit."

21-22                   Reuben anti-murder

23-24                   Took Joseph's coat of many colors off of him & threw him in the pit.

25-27                    It was Judah's idea to sale Joseph to Ishmaelites. 

28                         Joseph was sold for 20 shekels of silver.

29-31                    Tore the coat of many colors and put blood on it.

32-33                     Coat of many colors used to trick Israel.

34-35                      Israel went into deep mourning for Joseph.

36                            Joseph was sold to an Egyptian named Potiphar.

Genesis Thirty-Eight

1-6                          Judah, his wives, and sons.

7                             Er was wicked in the sight of God and was killed by God.

8-10                        Onan was then given Tamar as wife, but instead of having sex with her, he used the pull out meathod spilling his seed on the ground.   As a punishment, God killed him.

11                            Tamar was told to remain in Judah's cabin as a widow.

12                             In time, Judah's wife died.

13                            Tamar was told that Judah went up to shear sheep.

14-16                       Tamar tricked Judah into thinking she was a whore.

17-18                        Things that were given to her.

19-23                       Tamar hid from Judah.

24-26                        Judah was going to burn Tamar, but did not when she brought out his gifts.

27-30                        Birth of Perez and Zorah.

Genesis Thirty-Nine

1                               Joseph was taken down to Egypt, where he was sold to the captain of the guards named Potiphar. 

2-4                           Joseph was successful in all that he did and became overseer of Potiphar's house.

5-6                            Blessed all his house and field, and Potiphar knew not what he owned.

7-10                        Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce Joseph, but he would not do such an evil thing as to have her as his own.

11-12                      Ran off, leaving his clothes in the hands of Potiphar's wife.

13-16                      Potiphar's wife sets up an evil trap for Joseph.

17-19                      Lie of Potiphar's wife makes Potiphar angry.

20                            Joseph is put in the king's prison.

21-23                      All in prison were put under Joseph's authority.

Genesis Forty

1-3                      The chief baker and butler were thrown in jail.

4-7                      The baker and butler each had a dream but knew not its interpretation.

8-11                    The butler tells Joseph his dream to interpret. 

12-15                  Joseph interprets the butler's dream and asks that he be recalled.

16-17                  The baker tells Joseph his dream.

18-19                   Joseph interprets the baker's dream.

20-22                  All that Joseph had interpreted came to be on the king's birthday.

23                         Yet the butler forgot all about Joseph.
