Thunder Chooses Soccer Over Football
Jimmy walks in to find his friend Thunder reading a book about football. Now to Jimmy this is
odd for Thunder never cared much for football. In fact as far as books go Thunder only read the
historical ones. So, Jimmy inquired as to why he was reading a book on football.
Thunders reply to this was, "that the book he was reading was on the history of football. I am
reading it in hopes that I might understand why people want to watch a sport where one team is out to
harm the other team. Afterall, there is already the international sport of soccer. A sport where they do
not harm each other so much. Football seems to me to be a throwback to the gladiators! If that be the
case I'd rather stay with the international game of soccer, it is safer that way."
Jimmy had to laugh at what Thunder had said. Jimmy then explained to him that "football was
not intended to get people hurt. When you tackle a person of the opposing team, however, this does
sometimes happen. Accidents could also happen if you slip on the field due to the weather."
Jimmy then explained that, "there was other sports like wrestling and boxing that goes back to the
gladiator days. That soccer might be safer, and more internationally known. Nevertheless, you still had
your scrapes and bruises. America is catching up with soccer, Team U.S.A. has it's fans even among
the youth."
Thunder sat back in his chair and took a puff out of his pipe. He then spoke, "Well,
maybe so, but I never cared much for boxing or wrestling either. My sports would be things like:
Soccer, Track & Field, Ice Skating, or Swimming. Things that imitate (to some degree) nature."
After this discussion Jimmy and Thunder went off to bed.
